Deb Ramsay |
Ms. Ramsay captures in her art the ancient practice of hand mudras, which are hand postures that move and direct breathing and the flow of energy through the body. "For me, hand mudras are about history, passage of time, and ritual. The same mudras can be traced to many different cultures. They have been used and passed down for centuries and are still vital components in rituals that offer comfort, solace, and healing." Many of Ms. Ramsay's works incorporate copper, gold, and silver mixed with eggshell to create a beautiful mosaic texture.
She also uses encaustic paint, a very durable compound that predates the invention of oil-based paints. Encaustic paint is a mixture of purified beeswax and pigment, which is then melted during the painting process. Well-preserved encaustic paints have been found on mummy sarcophagi.
Ms. Ramsay was recently chosen as a featured artist by Southwest Art Magazine. Ms. Ramsay studied art at the Pratt Institute and Brooklyn college. While living in the Pacific Northwest she was the recipient of the McKenzie River Gathering Foundation's Lilla Jewel Award for Artistic Achievement, the First Place award at the All Oregon Art Annual, and the Beaverton, Oregon Mayor's Choice award.
