Deliwe Sasa
Deliwe was born in 1967 at a mission in Zimbabwe, Africa. She grew up with her grandfather who carved wood and stone objects. Deliwe choose stone carving for herself because she felt that she could put more of her thoughts into the stone. She also believes that stone records the history of centuries of the earth. It is unusual for Shona women to become stone carvers, but Deliwe is an extremely talented artist and won't let anything stop her from expressing herself in stone.
The Shona believe that everything on earth contains a spirit, including the rock indigenous to their country. They believe that it is this spirit in the stone that speaks to the artist, who then listens, and works to set the spirit free.
