 Cheryl Olney
Cheryl grew up in Detroit in the 1950's surrounded by a loving family and caring neighbors. Cheryl's youth was spent at the local library and the Detroit Institute of Art. She spent 24 years as a social worker before leaving to join her husband in his toy company and resurrecting her love of creating beautiful objects from simple materials.
"As a little girl, I often played with paper dolls. As a grown-up and an artist, my love of paper and its possibilities continues. While I admire the work of others, I've never been big on representational work for myself. (I can't draw!) My concentration has been on form, content, texture, juxtaposition, abstracts.
My "Women of Color in Color" began as abstractions... small constructions cut from the whole of my paintings - a focus on the blending of color, form, and dimension.
Gradually my abstractions began to take on personalities. Some even became people - sort of - I called them "People Papers."
Suddenly life and heart and art came together (as they often do) and all the women that I've known and the women that I am began to appear in my head and in my art.
My husband Don suggested translating my paper "dolls" into wood. Birch - a light hardwood the color of artist's canvas seemed a perfect medium.
And so, in the late fall of 1997, my 51st year, the "Women of Color in Color" (and spirit and energy and honor) were born."
