1000 - A Mass for the End of Time Anonymous 4
Remember all of the year-2000 nervousness in the latter part of 1999? That was nothing. As the year 1000 approached, people all over the Christian world were convinced that the
Apocalypse--as depicted in the biblical Book of Revelation--and the end of the world were at hand. In one of the more interesting musical program ideas to be inspired by the turn of the calendrical odometer, Anonymous 4 revisits the original "millennium madness" with a disc of chant from around the year 1000--specifically, a Mass for the Feast of the Ascension, one of the few occasions on which the liturgy included readings from the Book of Revelation.

Coming Home Yungchen Lhamo
Make no mistake: Yungchen Lhamo's second RealWorld album, Coming Home--dedicated to His Holiness the Dalai Lama--is deeply personal, political, and powerful. With Hector Zazou producing and, for the first time, orchestral accompaniment, the Tibetan exile's music takes on the intangible spaciness of world-groove trance dance tracks. The lyrics, however, are firmly rooted in messages of the heart and the importance of home, to which Lhamo hopes to return.

DeProfundis Theater of Voices
Arvo Part, a refugee from serialism, here writes in a quasi-minimalist style that he calls "tintinnabuli," a sound that echoes medieval composition. A fan of vocal music ("The human voice is the most perfect instrument of all"), he uses choruses to superb effect. This disc includes some of his best work, including the popular Magnificat, beautifully rendered by the Theatre of Voices under Paul Hillier.

Devotion Various
This ecumenical compilation brings together sacred voices invarious states of ecstatic fervour from different faiths and traditions. Nine settings of devotional texts are delivered; Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan inevitably represents the Muslim world, and Purna das Baul the wildly ecstatic mysticism of the Bauls of Bengal. The Singh Brothers render Jim Prem Kio, the most sacred raag of Sikhism, whilst the Hindi faith is represented by Purshotamdas Jalota and Pandit Bhimsen Josh, among others.

Mantram: Chant of India Ravi Shankar
Mantram is Ravi Shankar´s effort to set Sanskrit chants from ancient Hindu scriptures to music, and the result is a captivating mix of chant and music. Produced by George Harrison, this collection of mantras and prayers from the Vedas, Upanishads, and other scriptures powerfully transports the listener to a place of peace where it´s possible to be one with the universe. It´s as if a heavy,
enveloping cloak of serenity falls from the dark, floating sounds of cello opening the CD. Shankar employs flute, tamboura, harp, and other instruments to accent the mighty "Om" thread that weaves itself through the cloth of this album, bringing together deep, ominous voices with delicate, earthly instruments.

On Yoolis Night Anonymous 4
The 23 works--plainchants, carols, songs, and motets--invoke
various aspects of the Christmas story: the visitation of the angel Gabriel, tributes to the Virgin Mary, gifts of the Magi, and hymns of praise for the birth of Christ. The sound is stunning: resonant yet intimate, warm yet vibrant. And while you can hear the individual character of each voice,
together these four women make a sound of uncommon purity and beauty.

Shri Durga DJ Cheb i Sabbah
San Francisco's DJ Cheb i Sabbah bends and twists Hindustani ragas into the modern world of sequencing and sampling for an intriguing snapshot of ancient India seen through modern
eyes--fascinating for both its incredible musical artistry and beautiful Hindu spiritualism. Plucking the sounds of drone, sitar, tabla, vocal, and other instrumentation from classic Indian recordings, DJ Cheb opens the modern universe of ambient and dance music through the gates of traditional
masters, creating one of the most innovative albums of 1999.

Snowfall Tony Bennett
Talk about smooth! Tony Bennett is the very definition of the word. Snowfall practically renders every other version of the songs included here null and void. Even "White Christmas" sounds better in Tony´s hands than it did in Bing´s. It could be because Bennett´s warmth extends not only from the quality of those pipes but his delivery. Snowfall is one holiday tradition you won´t mind keeping.

Tibetan Tantric Choir The Gyuto Monks
Nothing can prepare the uninitiated for the shocking sound of Tibetan throat singing, and these two liturgical pieces, each clocking in at near 25 minutes, are among the best, and most chilling, examples. The Gyuto Monks, in exile in India since the annexation of their native Tibet, have developed a tradition of singing that involves producing the lowest possible notes in the vocal range while simultaneously singing high overtones.

When My Heart Finds Christmas Harry Connick, Jr.
When My Heart Finds Christmas is a true classic that no lover of big-band jazz and singing (in the Sinatra style)--and Christmas music--should be without. There are so many great moments here that singling any one out would be at the expense of the others.
