DIA DE LOS MUERTOS
(Day of the Dead) is a popular and sentimental holiday that has been celebrated throughout Mexico for many centuries.
Rather than fear and mourn loved ones who have passed on, the holiday is a festival and embracement of the beauty of the cycle of life. It is represented with colorful processions, lively music, sugar skulls, dancing 'calacas' (skeletons), and much more.
Every year on November 1st and 2nd it is believed that the souls of the departed return to their earthly dwellings for a visit with loved ones. The families and friends honor the souls by preparing their favorite foods, games, etc for them. Much of the artwork is humorous and whimsical, not due to lack of respect, but more the opposite. It's a way of realizing that even though the dearly departed no longer walk among us, their spirits still live and carry the same personality as when they were alive.
