#1 Armaiti (Persian/ Zoroastrian/ Winter) The Prophet Mohammed is said to have kept cats himself. Persian cats are one of the oldest breeds of cats in the world and are very calm and quiet. Armaiti is a Persian (Zoroastrian) goddess; the personification of holy devotion, the daughter of the creator and represents righteous obedience. She is associated with the earth and is the goddess of fertility and the dead, who are buried in the earth.

#2 Shashti (early Spring/Hindu/Tabby, calico, black and white) In eastern India (Bengal) Shashti is a protectress of children. She’s an aspect of Durga and is worshipped by Bengali women desiring offspring, easy childbirth, healthy babies, and fertility. The cat is her vahana (mount). Here she carries a basket of multicolored kittens and flowers.

#3 Freyja (May Day/Nordic/ Maine coon) The goddess of spring. of love and death, pleasure and pain.  Freya’s tears were golden, and her golden hair sheds flowers as she walks. She drives to the battlefield on a wagon drawn by two grey cats, and takes the souls of the slain warriors to her hall for eternity in glory and heaven. The day Friday is named after her. Maine coon cats have thick fur and chest ruffs, and small tufts on their ears.

#4 Bast (Summer/Egyptian/ Abyssinian) The Ancient Egyptians revered cats, which were mummified and even buried in great tombs with their owners.  Bast is the Goddess of cats, the rising sun, the moon, truth, enlightenment, sexuality, physical pleasures, fertility, plenty, protector of the home, civilization, the arts, the Maiden aspect of the Triple Goddess. The Abyssinian cat is reputed to be descended from the ancient Egyptian cat.

#5 Chula (Siamese/Buddhist/ Autumn) Ancient Siamese texts show that these cats are venerated as guardians of the temples. When a person of high status died, officials would select one of these cats to receive the dead person’s soul. The cat will then be sent to one of the temples to live in immense luxury. Ancient texts reveal that these cats participated in ceremonies, religious or royal. According to legends, once one female cat named Chula remained in the sacred temple, in order to guard Buddha’s golden goblet, even when her mate and everyone left for war.

#6 Carlin (Black cat/Celtic Goddess/Halloween) Carlin was the spirit of the eve of Samhain (Halloween), the night the year turned to winter, and the ghosts of the dead roamed the world of the living. Related to the ”Cailleach”, from the old Irish caillech, or “the veiled one”, the Goddess of Winter, who is reborn October 31 (Samhain). She controlled the seasons and weather; the goddess of earth and sky, moon and sun. In Scotland a black cat on your porch is a sign of prosperity. In Finland legend, they carry the souls of the dead to the other world.  In legend, witches often have black cats as their familiars.
