Sabbath (Shabbat) rituals for beginners
by Lorraine Aho
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. Genesis 2:2-3 King James Version
Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the Sabbath day of the Lord thy God: in it thou salt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it. Exodus 20:8-11 King James Version
And he said unto them, The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath. Mark 2:27-28
The Sabbath was instituted to serve human needs. The Sabbath allows us to offer God praise and thanksgiving for the week past, and ask for help and guidance for the week to come. Observing the Sabbath ritual of candle lighting bestows the blessing of light to illuminate the world around you and above you.
Traditionally the woman of the house lights at least two candles eighteen minutes before sunset on Friday evening. You may add a candle for each child in the home if you wish. After lighting the candles, spread your hands out around the candles, drawing your hands inward in a circular motion three times to indicate the acceptance of the sanctity of Sabbath.
