The Colors of Feng Shui, continued...

An Additional Note On The Colour Red

Through experience, the colour Red is generally more powerful in terms of feng shui effectiveness compared to many other colours. Red, symbolising fire, can be beneficial or harmful depending on how, and where, you use it, according to De Nobrega. For instance, Red used in rooms where the #8 Flying Star is located, becomes very auspicious, since during Period 8, red empowers the wealth star. However, if bright red (which is yang/active) is used in rooms where the facing star (wealth) is the #5, then it actually strengthens the negative energy or Sha Chi; however, if the red in this room is dull or lack-lustre, it is considered a yin red and therefore not as active or dangerous.

At the time of Chinese New Year, red is the colour of happiness, prosperity and extreme good luck. It is symbolic of activity and immense good fortune. General good luck colours for the Year of the Dragon are white, gold and a little red, which helps to control the power of the dragon. "This year is a Yang dragon year, with a heavenly stem of "Geng", which symbolises strong Metal or Gold. As a result, the use of excessive Red would destroy the metal and the Dragon too much," De Nobrega warns.

She adds, "In the study of the 4-Pillars of Destiny, the element that conquers or controls the self is called power, thus for status, power and authority, a little bit of Red is good."
